Self-Employed and Shopping for Health Insurance? Read This Before You Compare Premiums
When you work for yourself, health insurance stops being something an employer hands you and becomes a business decision you make alone, usually in a hurry, usually during open enrollment. The mistake we see most often: comparing premiums across both markets as if they were the same shelf. They are not.
The assistance gap catches self-employed people
Public marketplace pricing is built around government assistance. Plenty of self-employed people earn too much to qualify for meaningful help, which means the public price they see is the full price, no discount underneath it. Comparing that full price against a private quote without knowing which market fits you is how people overpay for years.
Private plans are based on your health instead of your income. If you are relatively healthy, underwriting works for you, and private coverage can put your money into benefits instead of into a structure designed for somebody else.
Your work does not stay in one zip code
A lot of self-employed work moves: clients in other cities, jobs in other states, family spread out. Private plans typically run on nationwide PPO networks, so care you get on the road is far more likely to be in network. A narrow marketplace network can turn an out-of-town urgent care visit into an out-of-network bill.
Timing is different than you think
Marketplace plans follow the open enrollment calendar. Miss the window and you usually need a qualifying life event. Private plans can be applied for any time of year, which matters when you are starting a business, leaving a job, or aging off a parent plan mid-year.
None of that makes one market better in general. It makes one of them better for you, and finding out which takes one short conversation about your health, your income, and your doctors.
Where to start
